Features

Everything a coach needs

Purpose-built for the sideline - for referee coaches and team coaches alike. Every feature designed around the reality of live match capture and post-match review.

Live Match Timer

Start the clock and capture in real-time - referee decisions or player actions - every entry timestamped to the second with half tracking.

Field Position Heatmap

Tap the pitch diagram to record where each event occurs. The heatmap reveals spatial patterns - where events cluster and which zones see the most action, for referees and teams alike.

World Rugby Laws

Every penalty links to the relevant World Rugby Law. Coaches and referees can discuss decisions in context, with the law reference built right in.

Coaching Moments

Flag events for coaching discussion. Record observations, areas for improvement, and positive feedback - building a structured debrief for every match.

Card Tracking

Record yellow and red cards with player numbers. Cards appear in match stats, event logs, and exported reports - a complete disciplinary record.

Quick Entry & Voice Capture

Switch to Quick Entry for the fastest possible capture - team, law and outcome in a streamlined flow. Or tap Speak Event and dictate the whole call: Rugby Ref Coach parses it into a structured entry, hands-free.

Reports & Sharing

Export a polished PDF with statistics, event timeline, heatmap, and coaching notes. Share reports via link or email - recipients get a read-only view, and you can revoke access anytime.

Offline-First PWA

Install on your iPad and use it pitch-side without wifi. Events save locally and sync when you're back online. No app store needed.

AI Coaching Review

After the final whistle, AI turns every event, coaching note and law reference into a structured review - whether you're assessing a referee against the Laws or debriefing your team - with strengths, focus areas and next-session training priorities.

Team Coach Mode

Coaching a team instead of a referee? Switch to number-first capture - tap a jersey, tap the action. Build a player runsheet, track subs and position switches, and get a player-coach AI review with training focuses.

Referee Comparison

A roster makes each referee one identity however their name was typed. Compare any of them against the median for their grade, or put the whole panel side by side - rate-normalised, consistency shown, and deliberately not a ranking.

In Action

See it in action

Every screen designed for the sideline - fast, clear, and focused on what matters during a live match.

AI Coaching Review

Post-match intelligence, not just data

Once the match is done, tap Coaching Review for an AI-generated debrief. The system scans every event, card, coaching note, and law reference to surface patterns a spreadsheet never would - then writes a structured coaching narrative ready for the post-match conversation.

  • Detects penalty surges, half imbalances, and card clustering
  • Identifies law blind spots and over-policed areas
  • Tracks improvement trends across multiple matches
  • Generates a personalised coaching narrative with specific recommendations
New · For Team Coaches

Coach your team, player by player

Team Coach mode points the same live-capture engine at your own side. Tap a jersey number, tap the action - and the match builds itself into a player-by-player picture.

Team Coach mode - number-first player capture pad with team stats and player runsheet
Number-first capture

Tap the number, tap the action

Choose the team you're tracking at kick-off, then log everything by jersey - tries, line breaks, missed tackles, penalties conceded and more. Discipline stays law-referenced, and scoring flows straight to the scoreboard.

  • Configurable squad size - 15s, 7s, or any competition
  • Substitutions & position switches - the pad relabels live
  • Quick voice notes saved as coaching moments
  • Field heatmap, event log & PDF report - same as referee mode
  • AI review from the player-coach angle - strengths, focus areas & training priorities
Player runsheet & stats

A player-by-player picture

Every action rolls up into team stats and a per-jersey runsheet - points, tries, positives, errors and discipline, split by half. See who's carrying the load and where the game is being won or lost.

  • Team stats by action, split 1st / 2nd half
  • Player runsheet grouped by jersey number
  • Discipline broken down by World Rugby Law
  • Live current lineup - substitutions and switches tracked
Team stats and player runsheet grouped by jersey number
AI Coaching Review for team coaches - strengths, areas to focus on, and training priorities for the next sessions
AI Coaching Review

A player-coach debrief - and a training plan

After the final whistle, the AI turns your captured events and voice notes into a structured review written from the player-coach angle - and, most importantly, clear priorities to take straight into your next training sessions.

  • Strengths grounded in the data - who drove the attack and defence
  • Areas to focus on - discipline, set-piece and ball security
  • Training focus for next sessions - specific drills tied to what happened
  • Fully editable, and included in the exported PDF report
How It Works

Three steps to a better match review

1

Create a Match

Pick Referee Coach or Team Coach, add the teams and date, and you're set. Optionally tag it with your association.

2

Track Live

Start the timer and capture as it happens - penalties, cards and coaching moments as a referee coach, or player actions by jersey as a team coach.

3

Review & Share

Generate an AI coaching review, export a professional PDF, and share it with the referee, your team, or your association.

Built on the Laws

Grounded in World Rugby's Laws of the Game

Every penalty and free kick maps directly to the official World Rugby Laws. Select the law category, choose the specific infringement, and the full reference is attached to the event - creating a shared language for development. The same law reference backs discipline in Team Coach mode, too.

Law 9 - Foul Play Law 10 - Offside Law 11 - Knock-on Law 13 - Players on Ground Law 14 - Tackle Law 15 - Ruck Law 16 - Maul Law 18 - Touch Law 19 - Scrum Law 20 - Penalty & FK Law 21 - In-goal

Compare referees on the same level, honestly

Once your panel is logging matches, the obvious question follows: how does one referee compare with another? Rugby Ref Coach answers it with a coaching picture rather than a league table - rate-normalised, filtered by grade, and candid about what the numbers can and cannot tell you.

Association roster - canonical referees with match counts, alias linking, and the association's grade list
Referee roster

One referee, however the name was typed

Coaches type a referee's name as they know it. The roster makes each referee a single identity, so "S Whitfield" and "Sam Whitfield" gather into one profile instead of reading as two people - without editing anybody's match reports.

  • Unlinked-names queue shows exactly which matches count towards nobody
  • Link a spelling once and every past match resolves with it
  • Merge duplicates, rename without breaking history, archive without losing it
  • Set the grades your competition actually runs
Profile vs grade median

Measured against the standard for that grade

Every figure is a rate or a share, so a 60-minute grade compares fairly with an 80-minute one. The median is taken across every referee at that grade, so it holds still and can be quoted - the 1st Grade standard, not a number that moves depending on who you clicked.

  • Penalties and free kicks per 10 minutes, not raw counts
  • Sanction split - how even the whistle was across the two sides
  • Advantage played on, set piece completed and sanctioned, scrum resets
  • Match-to-match spread shown as a band, so consistency is visible
  • Where the sanctions come from, by World Rugby law area
Referee profile compared against the grade median, with spread bands showing match-to-match consistency
Several referees side by side at the same grade, grouped into game-flow and other measures
Side by side

Your panel, on the same level

Put referees next to each other at one grade. The first block is the game-flow reading - fewer sanctions, more advantage played on, cleaner set piece, more ball in motion - so you can see at a glance who lets a game run and who stops it.

  • Any number of referees, one grade, one median
  • Game-flow measures grouped and marked, never totalled into a score
  • Consistency shown beside every average
  • Law-area mix compared across the panel

Deliberately not a ranking

There is no score and no league table, on purpose. A match report records what was called and where - never whether a decision was correct, how it was communicated, or how the referee carried themselves. Events are logged by whichever coach was watching, and how thoroughly they log varies more than most refereeing does. So differences are presented as shape, with sample sizes, spread and data-quality warnings shown alongside. It is built to start a coaching conversation, not to settle a selection argument.

For Associations

Built for referee panels and coaching groups

Rugby Ref Coach isn't just for individuals. Referee associations and team-coaching groups can centralise their development program with full visibility across every member.

Association admin dashboard showing total reports, members, events logged and recent match reports
Member Management

Members - referees or team coaches - request to join your group. Admins approve memberships and promote leaders. Global admin oversight keeps everything accountable.

Centralised Reporting

Every match tagged to your group flows into a shared dashboard. Split referee and team-coaching stats, filter by member, and review trends across everyone.

Referee Roster & Comparison

Make each referee one identity however their name was typed, set your grades, then compare like with like - a coaching picture, not a ranking.

Admin Controls

Association admins manage their own membership. Global admins have full oversight with user management, access control, and cross-association visibility.

Data Privacy

Members own their data. Admins only see matches tagged to their group. Personal matches stay private.

Demonstration Association

Every member is automatically joined to a Demonstration Association - a working example with match reports, a referee roster and a full set of comparisons - so they can explore the whole group experience from day one, read-only.
